Basketball refs back on job

LOCAL basketball officials will resume duties today now that the pay problem between themselves and the Southern Basketball Association (SBA) has been resolved.

As a result of the impasse, matches in the division two and three men's and women's open league fixtures were affected. Action in the women's league resumes this evening with two games, the first beginning at 6:00.

Two weeks ago the referees boycotted their matches. They were protesting against the non-payment of match fees owed to them by the SBA.

The Jamaica Basketball Association is the governing body for the sport here, however, they are only responsible for the running of some competitions.

Jamaica Basketball Referees Association president, Pete Matthews supported the stoppage stating that compensation was past due.

"There was some outstanding payment to be made to us by the Southern Basketball Association for the longest time now. Saying that we went on strike is too strong a statement. We just simply stopped working for that period."

He also confirmed that the officials will resume their duties today.

"We will start working again on Monday now that we have been paid," he said.
