THE EDITOR, Sir:
THERE IS now empirical evidence to indicate that the reports on which reliance was placed re my criticisms of the Corporate Area coroner's court (seeThe Gleaner dd. 12.5.2001 p. A5) were inaccurate. I indeed portrayed the situation to be more repugnant than obtained at that time.
The faux pas is regretted and my apologies profound to the members of Cabinet and Chief Justice for any embarrassment or distress occasioned thereby.
However, more space is needed for the irrepressible and indeed gallant staff who huddle in close proximity to the historic/nostalgic strong room and narrow corridors which were believed to have been the loci in quo for many unforensic activities in the hectic 1960's when I was collecting officer for the parish of Kingston.
Probably the time has come to site this important court in its own building, instead of being the physical appendage of another court.
Of course, an amendment to section 5(i) of the Coroner's Act would be effected, in order to allow Deputy Coroners (clerks of courts) to sit simultaneously with coroners. This would speed up the work of the court and help to dispose of any existing arrears with dispatch.
I am, etc.,
