What's education's worth in Ja?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with pity, utter disgust and frustration that I am now taking this opportunity to ask the question, what is the use of a tertiary level education in Jamaica? We are told to stay in school, get a good and solid education, but what is it for? Is it just for self-actualisation or is it to assist us as humans towards developing self and the nation on the whole?

Jobs? Where are they and who are getting them? Graduate from a reputable tertiary level institution with some level of work experience, a first degree and a second degree no jobs. Where do we go? Is it to the Small Business Association of Jamaica for loans or is it petty cash of which we have no collateral to secure?

How then are young, vibrant and intelligent persons expected to survive and assist in the development aspect of this country? My only guess, a process of brain drain, get some immigration assistance and get into a programme where you can at least get a start in one of those pro-investment countries. We need real jobs, real opportunities so that we can make and see real growth for Jamaica.

I am, etc.

"FRUSTRATED"
