THE EDITOR, Sir:
PLEASE ALLOW me to express my concern about some segments of our television programmes. A large per cent of programmes have intimate bedroom scenes.
It is well known that knowledge has increased and we are generally more enlightened than in the past. Therefore, it must be quite clear that bedroom scenes, by their very nature, belong in the bedroom, and have no place in other people's living rooms. Some of these scenes would make an experienced prostitute blush. What was previously shared in hushed tones is now discussed publicly or vividly displayed on the screens, at times leaving nothing to the imagination.
Some advertisements make it difficult to know exactly what is being advertised, as it is mostly female body parts which are being highlighted.
Some of us might agree that pictures are a very effective method of teaching, and our youngsters are viewing and learning.
It is possible that our youth could get the impression that their bodies are cheap, and that there are no intimate or private moments. Young viewers could well lose whatever shred of self-respect and dignity which might be taking shape in them.
I call upon the agencies which must advertise, to insist that more appropriate and creative methods be used to introduce their products. I call upon those persons who must hire or purchase films for public viewing, to ensure that these are screened for any harmful messages they might convey before releasing them to the viewing public.
I am, etc.,
