MAJ responds to injunction on Gleaner

James

THE COURT'S decision last week to grant an injunction barring the publishing of an article in The Gleaner is deeply regretted, says the head of the Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ), Newton James.

Mr. James said especially in light of the fact that the content of the article was not a threat to national security, the press should be allowed to act without interference.

He said Jamaica has a time honoured history of press freedom and the journalistic profession has always been left to function with objectivity and responsibility as long as the practitioners remain accountable to the statutes of the land as they relate to libel, contempt and privacy. Any individual who feels that his or her rights are affected is free to seek the appropriate remedy in a court of law after publication.
