Summer'sCool 2001 was hot

WESTERN BUREAU:

WHILE THE upper level of Margueritaville listened to a one-man band - Bevan Green, the lower level of more than 800 young people, ages ranging between 18 - 25, paid homage to pop stars DMX, Ja Rule and Eve.

The summer heat permeated the atmosphere and no matter how hard the promoters of Summer'sCool 2001 tried; they could not keep these young people cool enough.

To say they were 'schooled' by Skyy Disco on Friday night, with Squeeze coming all the way from Kingston as their tutor, was true. His selection of the new remixes of R Kelly's Fiesta and Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On had the dancing crowd in a frenzy.

Joined by DJs Smoke and Foodie, Squeeze continued his classroom presentation with the selection of Sizzla's Get to the Point and Capleton's Hot Wuk, which he said he did because he saw the vibes of the people.

"A DJ must never play what he likes, because he will be playing for himself, at all times it's the vibes of the people that matters," he told The Gleaner.

When he entered the Ska era with Oh Carolina, My Boy Lollipop and Bob Marley's Simmer Down, the young people competed to show their versatility, as if wanting to impress the older folks with their knowledge of the older dance moves.

An overjoyed Montego Bay Community College student, who didn't want her name mentioned, told The Gleaner; "Exams are finished, this was an after-exam celebration for us, today was our last day at school and we wanted to be here", she said.

Like the Community College students, many students from the other institutions 'jam packed' the venue. Friday night was the first in the Summer'sCool series, lesson two will see Montego Bay's Pieces on July 20, with graduation, The Conclusion, scheduled to take place on August 24.
