Lack of leadership

THE EDITOR, Sir:

he current discussion on events in western Kingston leaves me, as I am sure most Jamaicans, with the distinct impression that our political leaders have been left behind on the road to a new Jamaica. The charges and counter-charges of culpability, the descriptions of Jamaican citizens as "JLP People" and "PNP People", the inability of so-called leaders to listen to each other, are all, quite frankly, offensive.

We require leadership that lifts us up, that makes us feel proud of who we are and can be, and that shows respect for every one of us, regardless of who we choose to vote for. We require leadership that is not "fighting against" domestic enemies, but "standing for" us, taking our place on the world stage.

We are a people of immense creativity and worth, who have much to contribute to our world. Unfortunately, if we continue to look in and not out, this generation would have been robbed of its opportunity to give to the other people who inhabit our planet.

I am, etc.,

ALWYN SCOTT
