Seduction on target again

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

THE super fit grey filly SEDUCTION ticked off another win at Caymanas Park yesterday, this time in the $315,000 Jamaica Thorough-bred Racing Hall of Fame Stakes Trophy co-feature over 1200 metres.

Earlier in the afternoon, highly fancied PROCEEDACCORDINGLY made most to win the inaugural running of the Reynold "Ren" Gonzalves Memorial Cup over 2000 metres.

The overnight allowance race was run in memory of the two-time champion trainer and former chairman of the Jamaica Racing Commission and Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commision who died on February 16.

For his exploits as a trainer, Gonzalves was inducted to racing's 'Hall of Fame' some years ago hence it was fitting that the first running of the race to perpetuate his memory came on the annual JRC 'Hall of Fame' raceday which normally preludes Derby Day.

To mark the occasion, the JRC displayed scores of historical memoribilia from its archives while Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) hosted a number of 'Hall of Fame' recipients over the years in the Director's Room, the list including trainers Billy Williams and Eileen Cliggott, former Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) chairman Dennis Lalor and ex-jockey Neville Cousley.

The "Ren" Gonzalves Memorial Cup was presented by his sister, Dorothy Fisher to Laurence Heffes, owner of PROCEEDACCORDINGLY. Offering odds of 2-1 with in-form Kenyatta Davis riding for trainer Jose Pinchin, the 5-y-o bay gelding by The Medic out of Proceed won by two lengths from his more fancied stable-companion and 4-5 favourite TECH ALL in the field of six. The winner was bred by Robert Daboub.

Meanwhile, SEDUCTION (4-1) led home MAN FROM ELDORADO (7-2) by two lengths with the even-money favourite THE BARBARIAN finishing third in the field of five. Topweight SPECTACULAR RUN led at a fast clip to turn for home a length clear of MAN FROM ELDORADO and SEDUCTION on the inside. In the end, SEDUCTION came through midway the last furlong to record her second consecutive win and the third from her last four starts. She was ridden as usual by apprentice Valentino McBean for owner Raphael E. Gordon and trainer Roy Jackson.

  • CTL boss threatened

CAYMANAS Track Limited's President and Chief Executive Officer, Rose Campbell, was absent from Caymanas Park yesterday after apparently receiving death threats.

It was confirmed by The Sunday Gleaner that Miss Campbell filed a report at the Constant Spring police station that she was threatened by two men on Friday afternoon at her upper St. Andrew home. The men reportedly told her to resign her post within seven days or face the consequences.
