STATHS regain schoolboy supremacy

ST. ANDREW Technical High School (STATHS) regained schoolboy basketball supremacy with a 28-point victory over Ocho Rios High in the KFC final at the National Arena yesterday.

Buoyed by Kimani Samuels' game-high 18 points, STATHS registered period scores of 13-9, 26-13 and 45-21 for a final total of 66-38.

The Everton Carthy-coached team collected the league trophy while Fernando Young, boasting statistics of 17 points, nine rebounds, five blocked shots, seven steals and five assists, received the play-off MVP award.

Hydel, who finished third after defeating St. James High 74-58, collected three additional awards for emerging Southern Conference champions, beating out STATHS for the Senior League title and for being runners-up in the Junior League.

St. Catherine High were Southern Conference runners-up.

Highlighting yesterday's final however was the Million Dollar Bonanza shoot-off put on by the sponsors.

Twenty contestants took shots from the free-throw line including 76-year-old Gloria White and one-year-old Orlando Scott. But only Sly Scott and Sharon Swaby were successful in their first attempts. For that they won an additional $10,000 with the $25,000 granted to all the selected participants.
