Up Close and Personal at Priscilla's

DO you want to get real upclose with your favouite entertainer? Well Priscilla's Night Club might be the place to go.

Hundreds of fans of John Holt got their chance at Priscilla's last Tuesday when the veteran singer performed at the inaugural flight of the Up Close and Personal showcase. This is the start of a series of shows featuring the stars in reggae music.

Under the moonlight and stars Holt began the flight and set an impressive pace for others to follow.

The singer who reeled out hits like, Stealing Stealing, Happy Go Lucky Girl and A Stranger In Paradise caused many fans to leave their seats to dance.

Holt also did something else which his fans loved. He spoke of his boyhood days when he was adventurous.

Ms. Lorna Green, proprietor of Priscilla's, told THE STAR how she came up with the concept for show. "I felt with this open-top club we could have a lot of star performers who could get real close up to their fans."

"Priscilla is a small venue and we already have the ambience of the sky and the garden-like setting to promote this Up Close concept. I chose Holt because I knew he would sell out the house. But, I didn't realise the support would have been so overwhelming," she said.

Ms. Green said she took the idea to her two main sponsors and they were elated and immediately came on board. "I knew it would have worked well with vintage music becuase this is what the club is known for. We have a mature audience who appreciate this type of music," she added.

Mr. Desi Young, president of the Jamaica Federation of Musicians (JFM) was impressed with the Up Close and Personal concept.

"This first attempt with Holt was very successful. This is a great situation for live music in Kingston and I hope a lot of clubs will start having live shows," he said.

The series continues with others like Marcia Griffiths, Leroy Sibbles, Phyllis Dillon and Ken Boothe.
