THE EDITOR, Sir:
I FIND it absolutely mind-boggling that a 14-year-old American young man has taken on a project of the magnitude of the one which presented itself at the Mountain View Primary School.
This is unprecedented in Jamaica's history in terms of Anders Jones' age. Furthermore, what Anders Jones has done for the Mountain View Primary School proves that there is no necessity for the don culture if we as a nation are serious about change.
Anders Jones is far from being a don, yet he was able to provide substantial help for a school and its students. This says to me that if a 14-year-old young man can do this, then the same results can be achieved on a wider scale in inner-city communities without resorting to the don.
From an economic standpoint, decent, law-abiding citizens and organisations that are in a position to collectively assist downtrodden communities in conjunction with the government ought to do so without hesitation.
This will not solve all the problems but at least it will ignite the flame which may eventually lead to the permanent extinguishment of the don culture.
The role of the dons must see its 'final curtain' and young Anders Jones must be held up as a shining example of decency, integrity and caring. Thank you Anders!
