Jamaica in command

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CANA:

JAMAICA opener Leon Garrick's superlative knock of 172 and a dogged half-century from captain Jimmy Adams amassed an imposing first innings total against Barbados on the second day of their Busta International Shield semi-final match at Kensington Oval yesterday.

At the close, Barbados, replying to Jamaica's daunting first innings total of 496, were 47 for one with captain Sherwin Campbell not out 24 and Adrian Griffith on 16.

Barbados, the newly crowned Busta Cup champions, received an early setback when pacer Franklyn Rose trapped opener Philo Wallace palpably leg before wicket without scoring off the third ball of their innings with a ball which kept low.

Afterwards, Campbell, who played a couple of pull shots off Rose and the pesky Griffith, who spent 46 minutes on six without scoring, batted cautiously over the final hour, until fading light stopped play with two overs remaining.

Earlier, Jamaica, who resumed from 293 for two overnight following Wavell Hinds' fluent 101 on Friday, consolidated their strong position.

The Jamaicans, supported by at least a dozen flag-waving and merry-making students from the Cave Hill Campus of the university here, added a further 203 runs before they were dismissed with Adams undefeated on 56.

The left-handed Adams, who entered the fray at 347 for three - following Garrick's dismissal - to a mixed reaction from the spectators, many of whom booed him, hit six fours in his patient 147-ball innings which lasted 220 minutes.

The diminutive Garrick, who restarted on 139, played a number of classic cover drives in adding a further 33 runs before he was caught by wicketkeeper Courtney Browne off left-arm pacer Ian Bradshaw.

The 24-year-old Garrick, who has scored 764 runs for the season, batted for 459 minutes and hit 26 fours off the 327 balls he faced. The knock followed a career-best unbeaten 200 in last week's final preliminary game against West Indies B at Jarrett Park.

Garrick's departure ended a third-wicket stand of 88 with the highly-touted Marlon Samuels, who made a couple of crisp shots in his knock of 37 before he was deceived by a slower ball from seamer Hendy Bryan and clipped a simple catch to Bradshaw at mid-on.

Bradshaw, who was the pick of Barbados' bowlers with three for 97 off 29 overs, struck again in the final over before lunch, having Ricardo Powell caught in the slips by captain Sherwin Campbell for five.

On resumption, Bradshaw operated for almost the entire post-lunch session as he restricted the Jamaica scoring with some intelligent bowling.

Jamaica, who were 366 for five at lunch, lost the wickets of Gareth Breese, who struck five fours in a busy knock of 27 and wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert, who made 11.

Breese edged a cut shot off left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds to wicketkeeper Courtney Browne while Hibbert was trapped leg before wicket by Bradshaw.

But from 413 for seven, Adams, who batted cautiously, picking up singles and twos, and Nehemiah Perry featured is a useful eighth-wicket stand of 64 runs to carry Jamaica to their highest total against Barbados at Kensington, passing the 414 made in 1996.

Fast bowler Corey Collymore broke the stand when he trapped Perry lbw for 28 as he played back and two balls later, yorked Rose without scoring.

Adams, who was 49 when lastman Courtney Walsh joined him, eventually reached his fifty in 196 minutes but was again unceremoniously booed by spectators in the Kensington Oval.

The innings eventually ended when Walsh skied a catch to Campbell at short mid-wicket off Ryan Austin's bowling.

Austin finished with two for 80 from 29 overs, while Collymore took two for 95 off 30 overs and Bryan two for 104 from 32 overs.
