Kingston to launch victory charge

- Junior Dowie

Boys' Town's top scorer, Rohan Lambert, is caught and bowled by Kingston skipper Kerry Scott during the opening day of the 2001 Senior Cup season yesterday.

KINGSTON are poised to get their Surrey Senior Cup campaign off to a winning start after a solid performance on day one of their encounter with an underdone Boys' Town at Sabina Park yesterday.

When stumps were finally drawn at 5.35 p.m., the hosts were comfortably placed for a victory drive at 113-2 in response to Boys' Town's opening effort of 161 on a pitch which harboured few demons.

"We will look to score quickly and get about 50 ahead and put them back in before lunch," Kingston skipper Kerry Scott said soon after play was halted.

With left-handed opener Nicholas Austin (61 not out) and No. 4 Mario Ventura (25) striking the ball well, the visitors could be chasing substantially more than a half-century of runs when they return to the crease.

Veteran Boys' Town off-spinner Herbert Haye said his team's preparations got off to a late start and that was patently clear when the side, after being sent in, slumped to 90-6. Opener Jonathan Smith was the shining light of a mediocre top order with a gritty 34 before being caught behind by new Kingstonian 'keeper Matthew Sinclair off Scott.

Fortunately, a 51-run, seventh-wicket partnership between Winston Steel and lusty hitting Richard 'Buju' Lambert added a degree of respectability to the visitors' total.

Lambert clipped three fours and a six before driving straight back to off-spinner Scott for 35 while Steel was last man out when he was caught at square leg by Sadique Phillips off Ventura for 21.

Marvin McQuinn and Raymond Ferguson were both back in the pavillion with only 54 on the board for Kingston, but Austin, with eight boundaries, and Ventura, with two, stepped up the pace until stumps.

"There were catching let-offs today and some misfields, but all in all, if everything is working, we should be able to roll them over," Scott said.

AT CHEDWIN PARK: Melbourne, sent in to bat by homesters St. Catherine C.C., reached a commanding 309 for seven off 98 overs. Carlton Baugh Jnr. 83 (five fours), Colin Fletcher 66 (seven fours), Donovan Pagon 55 (four fours, a six, one five) and Llewelyn Meggs 36 n.o. were the chief scorers. The leading bowlers were Barrington Bartley Jnr. (2-36), Oneil Richards (2-68) and Devon Brown (2-70). Bad light stopped play at 5:31 p.m.

AT ELLESTON ROAD: Lucas 213 all out off 50.2 overs; (Royan Smith 41, Delroy Morgan 36, Dwayne Wellington 32, Andre Coley 30, Andrew Gayle 15 not out; Christopher Gordon 3-36, Timmy Thomas 3-49 and Rohan Belight 2-54). Police 74-9 off 33 overs; (James King 20, Daimian Fraser 16; Ashuman Kentish 2-11, Delroy Morgan 3-12, Omar Burke 2-22 and Andrew Gayle 2-15).

AT UP PARK CAMP: St. Thomas 133 all out (Rohan Chang 32 not out, Melvin Aquart 27; Warren Medwinter 5-32, Layton Brown 2-27 and Howard Copeland 2-35). JDF 105-5 (Marlon Kennedy 39 and Norman Hutchinson 29).

AT KENSINGTON: Ken-sington 192 all out (Samuel Douglas 68, Mechan Staple 36; Rohan Britton 4-52, Orean Housen 3-65). Tivoli 21-2 (Staple 1-4 and Errol Wilson 1-2).
