Jamaica, Leewards in tense battle

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CANA -

WICKETKEEPER Joel Simmonds hit a half-century and shared in a 77-run seventh-wicket partnership with allrounder Omari Banks as the Leeward Islands and Jamaica battled for first innings honours in their third round Busta Cup match yesterday.

At the close of the second day's play at the Edgar Gilbert Park in Molineaux, the Leeward Islands, replying to Jamaica's first innings total of 238 were 217-8 - needing 22 more runs for the lead with two wickets left.

Banks was unbeaten on 32 in 136 minutes with four fours while fast bowler Goldwyn Prince was on 10.

Jamaica, resuming from 195 for six overnight, added a further 43 runs while losing their last four wickets.

Overnight batsman Ryan Cunningham was out ten minutes after the start, caught at mid-on by Prince as he attempted to loft off-spinner Omari Banks, who finished with the impressive figures of seven for 70.

However, gutsy wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert hit five fours and a six in getting to 44 before he was run out.

Hibbert batted for 84 minutes and faced 86 balls while debutant Darren Powell was lbw to Banks without scoring to end the Jamaican innings.

In reply, the Leewards, 23 without loss at lunch, were given a solid start by openers Junie Mitchum and Alex Adams. The pair took the total to 53 before Adams departed lbw to the off-spin of Gareth Breese
