THE police have confirmed that they had to break up a stone and bottle-throwing incident in Summerfield, Clarendon, Friday night, involving Pearnel Charles, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for the Clarendon North-Central constituency, and Dr. Percival Broderick, former JLP Member of Parliament for that constituency.
The May Pen police said that the Chapelton police went on the scene to bring the brawl under control. When The Sunday Gleaner contacted the Chapel ton police yesterday, they confirmed going to the scene about 7:30 p.m. and that both men were involved, but said that details had to come from the May Pen Police.
However, the May Pen police said that they were in the process of collecting statements and could only say that one man was injured and a motor car smashed.
Reports to The Sunday Gleaner are that both men traded blows and that a brawl ensued when others became involved.
Neither men could be contacted for comments. When Mr. Charles' telephone number was called last night, The Sunday Gleaner was told by someone who identified himself as Mr. Cha-rles' security guard, that Mr. Charles was unavailable as he was giving a statement to the police. He said, however, that the windscreen of Mr. Charles' vehicle was smashed and he was grazed by splinters.
Mr. Broderick's telephone number rang unanswered.
Pearnel Charles, former Cabinet member in the JLP Government of the 1980s, is being challenged by Dr. Broderick for the Clarendon North-Central constituency.
In December The Gleaner reported that several JLP stalwarts in the constituency were lining up behind Dr. Percival Broderick, who is also a former chairman of the party, after party executives received complaints that Mr. Charles could not win the constituency.
