THE EDITOR, Madam:I WRITE to firstly encourage Rev. Stephen-Claude Hyatt on the wonderful work he has been doing. I am a committed reader to his columns, and I find them insightful and well written. In addition, he is seeking to tackle issues which others have been afraid to address.
His most recent article on Condoms in School was of particular interest to me. I am a school nurse at a popular girls school, and I can attest to the concerns Rev. Hyatt raised. Ms. Winsome Earle Sears who wrote to condemn Rev. Hyatt's observations, is all the way in New Jersey. She is obviously not aware of the realities here.
The reality, Ms. Sears, is that in spite of what the Church says and the Bible instructs, our children are having sex and are being infected with various diseases. We have a problem, and we must seek to address it, or as Rev. Hyatt rightly stated, it is going to lead to the destruction of the generation.
If you properly read his article, you would have seen that he was not calling for sex education to cease in the schools, nor for religious standards to be ignored. The truth is that these children know all the implications and religious instructions, but they still act. May I suggest that you continue to pray, and those of us who are faced with the challenges will continue to act in the best interest of the children.
Rev. Hyatt, please continue to write and speak, as we need more men like yourself to come out and take a stance.
I am, etc.,
MRS. SONIA FERGUSON
School Nurse
