Returning residents' plight

THE EDITOR, Madam:

FIRST of all I would like to say thanks for bringing to the nation's attention the plight of the returning residents and how they are being treated by this administration. For years we have been complaining about the extortionate rate of duties that returnees have been asked to pay. The price for returning home?

Each year, as you have stated in your commentary, politicians come to England telling us how we can help to build a better Jamaica - which most of us are willing to do. But after collecting my returning residents information pack and doing some calculations I found that I would be leaving up to 40 per cent of my income in taxes at the wharf. Imagine having to pay up to 260 per cent in taxes for your car.

You are correct in saying something can and must be done. Maybe an in-depth report by yourselves to highlight the high duties that all returnees face will prompt Dr. Robertson, his department and the Government to finally act to correct this injustice.

I am, etc.,

TONY HALL
