THE EDITOR, Madam:I READ the National Democratic Movement's (NDM) recently published two-page five-year anniversary feature. After reading every word of the feature I was left with a hollow feeling that the NDM is either suffering from an acute case of naivety, or like the Jamaica Labour Party, they are only interested in demonizing the PNP Government in order to win the next election, so they can get their weary hands on that pot of gold known as taxpayers' money.
Like the JLP, the NDM believes that the Government alone must solve all the problems in the country. In the same breath, they want the Government to have no power. All the power, they groaned, must be in the hands of the Jamaican people (can you visualise with me, 2.5 million people sitting in Gordon House banging desks?).
The other absurdity that the NDM wants to do, is to change the entire system; like the system by itself can do anything. It is the mind-set of the people that must change, as the only purpose in life many Jamaicans have is to commit crime, loaf, beg and breed like rats. No magic wand in the world can change that, except maybe the governmental system which exists in China and Singapore.
While the Government undoubtedly has an important role to play in providing adequate roads, water, light, security etc. for its citizens, daily political hypocrisy and nit-picking, will only delay these vital services as people's minds are constantly distracted every day by mindless political contortionists.
It is the people's (all of us) responsibility to provide food, shelter, and clothing for our families and ourselves. Whenever government tries to take on these tasks, they only create parasites, humbug, and waste.
As hard as I looked, I could not find any light in the NDM's lighthouse. It is true, the NDM is new, but it certainly is not different.
I am, etc.
