Not so, Mr. Hylton

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WISH to make a few comments concerning the proposed Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

I believe that Minister Anthony Hylton is either misinformed or disingenuous when he suggests that a CARICOM Single Market cannot exist without the establishment of the CCJ.

There are several trade blocs around the world, including NAFTA, that exist without a regional court. Disputes are settled via other previously established mechanisms.

David Coore is also trying to pull wool over our eyes by suggesting that only the very rich and the very wicked benefit from appeals to the Privy Council.

It is a fact that when the Privy Council makes a ruling, such a ruling then becomes applicable throughout our entire judicial system. This ruling then applies to all Jamaicans.

On the other hand, is it going to be significantly cheaper to take a case to CCJ? Good lawyers do not come cheaply. Are Caribbean lawyers going to try cases free of cost?

Gentlemen we should be honest and desist from misinforming the Jamaican people.

I am, etc.,

RADCLIFF KNIBBS
