SCHOOLBOY cricket in the corporate area received a timely boost yesterday when Grace, Kennedy and Company Limited announced a sponsorship deal of $817,000.
With the injection of the capital, Grace, Kennedy have taken over total sponsorship of the main event on the corporate area schoolboy cricket calendar.
The tournament will now be known as the Grace Shield and will replace the Sunlight Cup.
The Tappin Cup (knockout) has been replaced by the Allied Insurance Brokers Limited Trophy and the A League teams will compete for the George & Brandy Trophy.
However, the format of main competition will not be changed, according to Clement Radcliffe, president of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), during a press conference at the sponsors' offices on Harbour Street yesterday.
ISSA will stick with the structure that surfaced last year when they decided to divide the teams into two groups: a Premier League and an A League.
The Premier League will comprise 12 schools in two groups with the top two teams from each moving into the semi-finals and the bottom two teams beingdemoted to the A League.
While the corporate area competition has received a tremendous boost, the rural Headley Cup has failed to attract sponsorship.
Radcliffe, however, said the Headley Cup would still go on.
