Cruelty to polar bears

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WRITE with concern about the polar bears that are currently in Jamaica 'performing' with the Suarez travelling circus from Mexico. After having written to Polar Bears Alive, an international polar bear protection agency, I discover that they have been working for a long time to stop the cruelty inherent in taking these animals out of their natural habitat and trailing them around the Caribbean and Mexico in less than humane conditions.

I was also told that in most of the Caribbean islands, public outcry, and the intervention of local animal rights organisations, has stopped this circus from presenting these 'shows'. What I am now curious about is the deafening silence from the JSPCA on this matter.

I am etc.,

KATHY BLAIR
