THE ISLAND'S markets will be improved next year, says Minister of Local Government, Youth and Community Development, Arnold Bertram.
He said this was in recognition of how important markets were as income earners for residents.
"The conditions don't exist for all the buyers you want to come to the market nor do conditions exist for you to have a good environment for sellers," said the Minister.
He was addressing the opening of a community development exposition at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston recently.
The exposition was organised by the Social Development Commission (SDC) and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), and highlights the efforts of communities to empower themselves for national development. It was held under the theme 'Promising Practices in Community Participation', and is part of activities in observance of November as Local Government Month.
Pointing to the need for community based organisations to build partnerships with the private sector, civil society and government, the Minister said effort was being made to get private sector and government agencies to unite with communities to form Parish Development Committees (PDC). The PDCs would include local authorities, he said.
"The PDCs and the community development committees both have to come together in a more dynamic way, because the private sector in the parish needs to start to develop an appreciation of what it is that you are trying to do at the community level and how they can assist those efforts," he said.
Mr. Bertram also called on communities to interact with each other for development, share similar activities and take advantage of what each had to offer.
"Make the community comfortable enough for somebody to come from outside to participate with you and take advantage of what you have to offer, to do business with you, to invest in there," he told members of the community.
