Letter of the Day - Hope from tragedy

THE EDITOR, Madam:

AS WE grieve with families as the violence continues and people of all ages and classes are murdered at home, in the work place, on the road, or take their own lives let us hold on to any actions which remind us that all is not lost in Jamaica.

All Jamaicans should thank the people of Lorrimers, Trelawny for their actions once Mr. Alfred Chen's helicopter crashed. It was touching to hear a young man quietly describe on television how they walked miles till they found him. No one interrupted as he spoke. He described how he reassured Mr. Chen. "You nah go dead." They managed to place him on a sheet of zinc and he described how they put shirts under him and carried him out. He was put in the back of a pick-up and taken to hospital.

Mr. Alfred Chen loved these people and they loved him in return. Please note he had a gun. They knew he had a gun. He had fired his 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol in an attempt to draw attention to his plight. The gun was later found by the police at the crash site in Olive River.

These good Jamaicans were concerned with saving Alfred Chen's life, not acquiring a gun to possibly end a life or lives.

Thank God for them. They give me hope.

I am, etc.,
