Trinidad's Keno Mason is bowled by Dave Marshall as 'keeper Courtney Browne looks on at Chedwin Park yesterday.- Junior Dowie BARBADOS positioned themselves for a place in the semi-finals in the Red Stripe Bowl when they defeated Trinidad and Tobago by 67 runs at Chedwin Park yesterday.
Batting first after winning the toss, Barbados struggled to 185 in 49.4 overs and then, with left-arm pacer Ian Bradshaw grabbing three quick wickets and leading the way, knocked off Trinidad and Tobago for 118 in 43 overs.
Following an easy seven-wicket triumph over Canada in their opening match on Wednesday, yesterday's victory left Barbados with a perfect two from two, and with only two more matches to come, one against defending champions Jamaica and one against the US, they are well positioned to make it to the last four as one of the two teams from Zone A.
In a promising start to their innings, Philo Wallace, out first ball against Canada, cut the first delivery of the match from Marlon Black for six over third man and drove Darryl Brown confidently to the cover boundary in the second over.
With the total on 21 in the second over, however, Wallace was on his way - the big man driving loosely at a slower delivery and losing his middle stump.
From there on, it was a struggle for the Bajan batsmen on an easy pitch surrounded by a slow outfield.
The Bajans fought back once through a lovely fourth-wicket partnership of 77 in 21 overs between left-handers Floyd Reifer, 49, and Ryan Hinds, 18.
While Hinds, who batted for 91 deliveries and failed to strike a boundary was like a strokeless wonder, Reifer, who struck one six and stroked two boundaries off 70 deliveries, played well before he went at Rodney Sookhal and was brilliantly caught by Brown on the long-on boundary at 133 for four.
Trinidad and Tobago, like Barbados, got off to a promising start with left-hander Andy Jackson hooking the second delivery of the innings from Corey Collymore for four, driving the West Indies pacer straight for six in his second over and sweeping Bradshaw high to the backward square-leg boundary.
Bradshaw cut him down with the next delivery, however, and within a few overs Barbados, thanks to the former West Indies Youth captain, were on top with Trinidad and Tobago on the run at 24 for three.
Captain Richard Smith and Imran Jan - run out for 44 at 115 for eight - held up Barbados with a fourth-wicket partnership of 49 off 16 overs, but when Smith played across the line to offspinner Ryan Hurley and was leg before wicket for 22 at 73 for four and Keno Mason pulled away to cut and was bowled for zero at 74 for five in the 30th over by a googly from legspinner Dave Marshall it was, in effect, all over for Trinidad and Tobago who lost their last seven wickets for 45 runs in 15 overs.
