Crime creeping uptown

THE EDITOR, Madam:

WHAT'S GOING on in this country some will say. The crime is "creeping" uptown and no doubt many more are thinking of leaving Jamaica. Will the politicians continue to sleep OR will the "big wigs" and the media attention start to wake them up. When people are killed in the ghetto the media treats them as statistics but when someone uptown gets killed it is such a "tragedy".

I thought that all life was precious, but clearly the world isn't level and everyone is not equal. I have lived in the middle class all my life and found it ironic and hypocritical that people were criticising Paul Burke for his recent statements regarding crime uptown vs. downtown and that crime has always been in the ghetto.

To be honest, this morning I cringed and grieved for the wife and family of the KFC executive, Mr. Wijesekera. I also realised that I among others have become insensitive and de-sensitised to the crime faced by many Jamaicans in the ghetto. It also got me thinking that most likely and correctly, KFC would probably give some monetary reward for information leading to the arrest of the killers.

However in the last few years has any employee of KFC or any of their relatives been murdered or the victim of a serious crime? Could Mr. Paul Burke now be justified in asking where was the offer of a reward then?

I am still a fanatical Jamaican. In no hurry to leave.

I am etc.,
