The Cynic: Only the good suffer, never the bad

By Archibald Gordon, Youth Writer

EVER SO often one begins to think that doing the right thing never helps. Ever so often one finds out that trying to be a "good person" in the land of the self-centred-will-stab-you-in-the-back-at-the-first-chance, just doesn't cut it. Well at least not in this world and certainly not in this country.

If you try not to offend people, it will happen anyway. They'll accuse you of trying to be a "goody too shoes" and hate you just because you don't want to hate people for the silliest reasons. Being kind to people is always construed as a sign of weakness and they will think you're weak. You're especially weak if you can't handle a drink or two and don't fill your lungs with cancerous smoke.

Ever notice that the heroes are always the people who have "recovered"? You don't get points for never having tried the stuff in the first place.

At home, it's no different. Being the "good child" in the family doesn't help since it's the black sheep that gets all the attention. Having a conscience is perhaps the worse thing that one can do to oneself. It will ensure that your parents gut you for all your worth and give everything to the bad one since you'll survive without it, and the "spawn of Satan" won't.

Women can say what they want but the truth is that they often go for the rough, rude guys not the nice, decent guys. Men are the same. Make no mistake: "Considerate women will be used." Then we will all be stereotyped. "All men are dogs," the feminists and non-feminists alike will say. And that phrase you hate to hear will be sure to pop up somewhere along the line. "Well, you know, the good have to suffer for the bad." The problem that the "good" have with that is that it really is "only the good suffers, never the bad."
