St. James defeat Herbert Morrison

Western Bureau -

ST. JAMES High School notched their second win in Zone A of the 2000 Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition yesterday coming from behind to beat Herbert Morrison 3-1 with goals from Junior Malcolm, Delvan Ellis and Omar Campbell in their game in Montego Bay.

"We are quite pleased with the way the team played today, they followed the instructions of the coaching staff and got the result we wanted," said Gavin Edmond, technical director of St. James High. "We are now back on track in terms of our inter-zone ambition so we intend to push on from here."

In what was a keenly contested match-up, Herbert Morrison had the better of the early exchanges and after coming close twice, took the lead in the 33rd minute when Sydon Salmon fired a shot that rolled between the legs of goalkeeper Andre McKnight into the goal to make the score 1-0.

St. James went into overdrive and were rewarded in the 38th minute as Malcolm won possession in a goal-mouth melee and fired powerfully past goalkeeper Keith Wilson, making the half-time score 1-1.

In second half action, St. James High wrestled full control and after launching a series of unsuccessful raids on the Herbert Morrison goal, they took the lead in the 70th minute when Ellis pounced on a rebound before goal and calmly slotted home, making the score 2-1.

With their fans still celebrating, St. James High sealed the issue with a superb strike in the 72nd minute. The wily Campbell controlled perfectly before the Herbert Morrison goal and with the goalkeeper charging out, he neatly chipped the ball into the roof of the net, making the final score 3-1.
