A country in billions of US dollars worth of debt. A nation's culture that is self-seeking and a state where 'politricks' and not politics is the order of the day.
If this paints an accurate picture of Jamaican, how can we as citizens call this country of ours emancipated?
Emancipation means to be free from social, political and moral restraint. And while we may argue that we are free from the tyranny of slavery and colonialism, one has to admit that we have only exchanged our oppressions of the past for new ones as we are still under social, political, moral and even economic bondage.
Every day our political leaders (who manage to hold office even when they are underachievers) drag us further into debt. The size of this debt has become so large that we are subjected to the whims and fancies of lender countries, which will do with us as they wish.
Why have the citizens not taken a stand to stop this degradation? Is it because we have become enslaved by our desire for material things and affected by low morals and values that we refuse to work together to the advancement of our country or to help our less fortunate brothers?
In my opinion an indebted, politically and morally misguided country cannot call itself emancipated.
