Weekend art at Devon House

- Contributed

"Saturday Market" by Leopold Barnes.

A SERIES of weekend art shows kicks off next week Sunday at Devon House with an exhibition titled "Courtney Morgan and Friends".

The show, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in the courtyard, is the first of what is designed to be a "monthly art expose".

According to spokesperson Dawn Vaz, the works of a specific artist will be featured each month in a mini-exhibition mounted in the garden on Sundays only. A craft exhibition will be hosted on Saturdays to complement the Sunday offering of fine arts.

"The idea is to expose established and upcoming artists to the public, and stimulate interest in fine arts," Ms. Vaz told The Sunday Gleaner.

For August, the featured artist will be Courtney Morgan, noted for his landscapes of rural Jamaica.

Primarily self-taught, Mr. Morgan helped to establish the Trafalgar Artists Co-operative in 1980. Over the years, he has participated in numerous local and overseas exhibitions, continuously refining his work and developing an impressionistic style for which he is known.

Also scheduled to be on show will be a selection of pieces from artists Sam Phillips, Desmond Morgan, Nadine Anderson-Cheng, Sonia Richards and Leopold Barnes, in an island image theme.

The "Courtney Morgan and Friends" exhibition will be mounted every Sunday in August.

Meanwhile, the first of the fine craft grouping is expected to begin on August 12, according to Ms. Vaz, and will feature a selection from four top photographers."

Other participants being planned for the fine craft fair include potters, metalsmiths (makers of jewellery in gold and silver), and printmakers.

"We are also hoping to host workshop sessions and video presentations to heighten the role of this unique garden gallery," Ms. Vaz said.
