...offers condolences to family of young footballer

CAPTAIN Horace Burrell yesterday expressed condolences on behalf of himself and the executive of the JFF to the family of footballer Carlynton Salmon.

"We wish to express our condolence to his parents, the staff and students of St Elizabeth Technical High school and all his friends," read a press release from Burrell.

The JFF also extended the hand of supporting stating that,"the JFF stands ready to assist in any way possible".

The 14-year-old St Elizabeth technical High School student drowned at the Kacletlangen beach just outside Olso, Norway on Friday. Salmon was the goalkeeper for the Essex Valley All-Star team who were in Norway for their annual international club football tournament for players between the ages of 11 and 14.

According to a report the team which arrived in Norway on Thursday camped near the beach. A number of players, the report continued, went to the beach under the supervision of a tour assistant after eating.

It was further reported that Salmon was among four boys who defied the instructions of the assistant not to venture into the deep area. While in that area the report said, Salmon and Jacob McLynch who were not good swimmers got into difficulty after trying to join Jason Simpson and Johnathan Hibbert who were on a platform about 30- 40 metres out into the water.

According to the report the two were told to turn back before they got into difficulty. When they did get into difficulty, the report continued, Hibbert managed to leave the platform and rescue McLynch but could not help Salmon as he was to big for him to manage.

It is understood that the players who were due to begin competition today will remain in the country and participate while a post mortem is scheduled for Wednesday on Salman's body to have it flown home on Friday.
