A 44-year-old man died after he went to the rescue of his colleague who had fallen into a sewage pit in Franklin Town, Kingston, on Sunday.

Dead is Donald Gayle, driver, of Mavis Bank, St Andrew.

The incident occurred at Upper York Street about 11 a.m., while the men tried to remove effluent from a sewage pit.

The Franklin Town police have confirmed that Gayle, along with a co-worker, went to the community to remove waste. He allegedly got into difficulties.

The co-worker called out to Gayle, who went to his aid and pulled him to safety. Gayle, however, got into problems, fell and subsequently died. His body was removed with the assistance of the fire brigade.
