Steep task in Cornwall Mountain division

Portia Simpson Miller and the PNP face the acid test in the Cornwall Mountain division in the Westmoreland parish council.

Councillor Michael Smith died in office last month, triggering the by-election. Keith Barnes is contesting for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and Bernard Vanriel is the PNP's candidate.

Three of four key PNP members with whom The Sunday Gleaner spoke last week said that the party is faced with a steep task to retain the division it won by 76 votes in the 2007 local government election.

With the writing on the wall, the PNP is said to be pulling out all the stops. "It is a seat that we have to win. If we lose this our goose is cooked," one senior organiser told The Sunday Gleaner.

"We are going into Cornwall Mountain very confident, we have all the councillors and the MPs," said an upbeat Bobby Pickersgill.
