Buckle up!

"Seat belts can save your life." That's the advice from Kanute Hare, director of the Road Safety unit of the Ministry of Transport.

"Belts and straps keep you in position so you can control the car," Hare adds.

It has been proven that to ignore the use of safety belts is courting disaster. The seat belt minimises accidents by holding the driver in his seat and thereby in control of his motor vehicle during violent evasive manoeuvres. They also serve as protection from the danger of crashing through or into the windshield if the vehicle stops suddenly.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR SEAT BELT USE

1. Do not put two persons in one belt.

2. Ensure that the belt fits snugly over your hips.

3. Do not wear the shoulder harness without also wearing the lap belt.

4. Seat belts in the back seat are also very important for safety.

TAKING CARE OF THOSE VITAL BELTS

Andrew Brown, an experienced auto mechanic, offers some suggestions for caring the seat belts:

1. Check the recommendations in the owner's manual for your motor vehicle to properly maintain your belts.

2. Use mild soap and warm water when cleaning spills from your seat belts.

3. Refrain from using very strong detergent, bleach or dye. The caustic fluid in these solutions could weaken the material of the seat belt.

4. Remember to keep the buckle area clean and dry.

5. Do not encourage anyone to eat or drink in your vehicle, or allow crumbs or foreign items to play havoc and prevent your belt from buckling correctly, as this can weaken the belt's ability to hold firmly.

6. Take note that if the stitched-in loop has been extended the belt will certainly need replacement.
