IT WAS the 1990s and dancehall was on the rise. Cargo chains, stonewashed jeans and Air Jordan sneakers were the rage, and if you were a hot or upcoming act, you had to be in a crew. Remember these guys?
Main Street: Producer Danny Browne assembled a cast of deejays and singers who rocked the charts during the mid to late 1990s. Richie Stephens, Red Rat, Hawkeye, Buccaneer, Chrissie D, Chico and Degree were the big names.
Penthouse: Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Marcia Griffiths, Beres Hammond and Tony Rebel worked wonders for producer Donovan Germain.
Roof International: Producer Courtney Cole and his team quietly did their thing in Ocho Rios. Tony Curtis, Jigsy King and Future Troubles were some of the Roof acts.
Monster Shack: Ghost, Round Head and General B comprised this ghoulish trio.
Mad House: Dave Kelly was the man in charge here. Baby Cham, Louie Culture, Wayne Wonder and Daddy Screw had monster hits for one of the period's most creative crews.
Xterminator: Rootsman skanking with producer Phillip 'Fattis' Burrell, whose roster of acts included Luciano, Sizzla and Mikey General.
Flames: Tony Rebel kept it positive at his production company with a slate of 'roots' acts, such as Deuteronomy, Sugar Black, Lebanculah and Ras Shiloh.
Shocking Vibes: Beenie Man was at the helm of this bunch which originated in Craig Town. Snagga Puss, Little Kirk, Tanto Metro and Devonte were also members of, arguably, dancehall's most successful crew.
