Monitor beaches for 'unclean music'
Published: Tuesday | February 17, 2009
I live adjacent to Cable Hut Beach, East Rural St Andrew, which is a popular public holiday destination for people in and around the Bull Bay area. On such occasions, there is typically a sound system set up and playing music loudly at the beach. We regularly have a problem with the volume of the music, and we occasionally have to call the police to address this.
However, what I would like to address is the content of the music. Much of it is highly unfit for children to hear. Just imagine what it is like to have friends come over with their children for a day at the beach on a Sunday, and music is being played very loudly on the public beach with strong sexual content.
I am a supporter of banning expletive lyrics in settings where they are not appropriate, and I believe that our public beach is such a place. I also feel that in the same way that the police take action against artistes who use expletives at a concert, they should take action against sound systems that play such content when it is inappropriate.
Is there the legal basis to support such action? If there isn't, I hope that whatever comes from this upsurge in efforts to clean up the media allows for such action to be taken.
I am, etc.,
