Minister of Finance and the Public Service Audley Shaw says Government has no intention of reimposing controls in the foreign-exchange market.
Reacting to a Reuters report which quoted Minister of Industry and Commerce Karl Samuda as saying that Government would have to return to imposing capital controls to rescue the Jamaican dollar, Shaw emphasised that it was never considered.
"It has never been contemplated or discussed inside or outside the Cabinet," Shaw said.
He continued: "Any opinion expressed is, therefore, most certainly not the opinion of either the prime minister, the minister of finance and the public service or the Cabinet of Jamaica."
Shaw said that while there have been problems in the foreign-exchange market, the Government was committed to a market-driven exchange rate.
