The fourth annual Douglas Forrest Invitational meet will take place today at the Stadium East complex.
The meet, which over the years has seen a number of past and present international track & field stars including Ato Boldon, Athens 200m Olympic champion Shawn Crawford, Torri Edwards, John Carlos, Mel Pender and Lee Evans visit as ambassadors, now welcomes Jim Hines, the 1968 Olympic 100m champion.
First sub-10 run
Hines who, at the 1968 United States national championships in Sacramento, California, clocked 9.9 seconds over the 100m - the first sub-10 run by an athlete - which was converted to 10.03 electronically, arrived in the island on Wednesday.
Brian Smith, chairman of the organising committee, said: "Jim will be there to talk with athletes and give out medals."
Smith also promised another "high quality meet".
"We anticipate another good day, good competition, keen rivalry and I hope the spectators enjoy the day and look forward to coming back next year ... and my sponsors will be happy for what they would have taken part in," he said.
All the top Corporate Area schools - Kingston College, Calabar, St Jago boys and girls, Wolmer's boys and girls, The Queen's School, St Andrew High, Immaculate and Jamaica College, are slated to take part.
Smith said teams from The Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Curaçao have also confirmed their participation for the meet, which serves as a qualifier for the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' & Girls' Athletic Championships.
The day's activities will start at 8:30 a.m. with the 400m hurdles and end with the 4x400m relays at 5:55 p.m.
Other events on the card are the 3000m for girls, 5000m for boys, 200m, 800m, sprint hurdles and 1500m.
In the field, long, triple and high jumps, along with the shot put, will be contested.
