Top girls schools from central Jamaica will be on show at today's 28th renewal of the Puma/Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association Development Meet, which will be staged at Kirkvine Sports Club in Manchester, starting at 10 a.m.
Reigning Girls' Champs winners, Holmwood Technical, along with Edwin Allen, Manchester and Vere, all conditioned by four of Jamaica's top high-school coaches, are expected to have good outings.
The boys' teams from these schools are also expected to take centrestage and although Kingston College (KC) are hosting the Douglas Forrest Invitational in Kingston, a few athletes from that school, including national 110m hurdles record holder and World Junior bronze medallist, Keiron Stewart, are expected to travel to Kirkvine.
The aim
Stewart, in a recent radio interview, said: "The aim right now is just to see where I am, competitive-wise."
Like the last four years, over 125 schools and institutions are expected to participate, with as many as 2,000 athletes. However, the final list of entries was not known at press time because teams will still be allowed to register this morning.
Several top athletes, including those coached by Stephen Francis and Glen Mills, are expected to turn out to show their support.
Pat Anderson, chief organiser of the meet, said Usain Bolt, the world's triple Olympic gold medallist and world-record holder in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m, along with all the MVP stars, including Asafa Powell, Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser, Sherone Simpson, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Shericka Williams, Germaine Mason and Melaine Walker, winner of the 400m hurdles in Beijing, are expected to attend the meet as spectators.
Carnival-style event
Anderson, said apart from the "normal competitiveness", a carnival-style event is expected.
"A real carnival-style event is expected, but one of the highlights, as usual, will be the presence of the top stars who will be there."
The events to be contested are 3000m (female), 5000m (male), which will open the day's activities, the mile relays, which are set to close the proceedings, along with the 200m, 400m and 800m.
