Enforce music ban on buses
Published: Saturday | January 17, 2009
In the 1980s, the then minister of transportation, Pearnel Charles outlawed the excessive use of loud sound systems in public-passenger vehicles.
I am again calling for this law to be reinforced or reinstated in light of what is taking place in our public-passenger vehicles.
It is as if you almost have no choice and one has to stand up strong sometimes in the face of great opposition not to have the noise with unsavoury lyrics thrown at you.
Sometimes passengers have their young children with them in these taxis being exposed against their will to these lewd and loud expressions of our music.
Call a spade a spade
Sir, it is hypocritical for the police to be asked to lurk at the edge of every stage show in Jamaica during the staging of major events to charge performers for the use of indecent language when citizens and taxi/bus drivers go free when they blare these same expletives through their automobile windows.
If we have any interest in washing the moral fabric of our society, we have to call a spade a spade and admit that nothing cleanses or contaminates the moral fabric of our society like the quality of our music.
Minister Henry and the powers that be, I call upon you to look at this situation in relation to the Noise Abatement Act and all the other related laws in order to begin to restore order and sanity to our nation's streets.
I am, etc.,
