What are you doing differently to cope with the effects of the global financial meltdown on the Jamaican economy?

Gary Osbourne, 33, customer service rep

I have started concentrating on things I really need rather than want. For instance, now I don't buy a pair of shoes because it is trendy right now, I have to be in need of it.

A cutback in partying is a must. I normally party right through the weekend, but now I try to party every other week or once a month. In terms of food, I try to buy the essentials only, nothing more, nothing less.

Shaniel Walters, 18, student

I am trying to save and conserve on the things I use. At school, we as students feel the economic crunch as well. This is because our lunch money has not increased as well, so we therefore have to find ways and means to cope with the difficulty and the economic changes that we are experiencing.

For example, if you have a cellphone, you have to cut back on the amount of credit you buy or go on a plan that can save you a lot of money.

Damion Miles, 30, security guard

A two things mi a do now still. One, I am seeking another job, and two, I'm opening another account. We need to look out for ourselves now, because the economy is not getting any better.

The less money I spend, the better it is for me. I see that now. In these hard times, one job is not enough, so I get another one to cover what the next job can't.

Yasan Lindo, 21, engineer

With regards to partying, there are a number of parties in a month and you need to prioritise the things in your life and go to one. I can't go to all of them or even a couple, because I have to be aware of all the high prices.

Food is on the rise, so I have to cut cost. One way to combat the crisis is by seeking higher education in a field that will be in demand in the future.
