Scepticism about public boards
published: Wednesday | November 19, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

However legitimate may be the reasons, the latest resignation by members of the Jamaica Tourist Board represents another awkward situation with regard to public sector boards.

Again, the explanation proffered for their resignation is to give the minister of tourism a 'free hand' in choosing a team to lead the recovery of the sector.

It may very well be a good thing to have a renewal in public entities in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness. But the frequency of these resignations/dismissals and the notion of free hand could suggest that public board officials have to be aligned to some extent to the governing party.

We are left to assume that these entities are not as nationalistic as they are political, leaving their tenure vulnerable to the outcomes of elections.

Not a good message

This cannot be a good message from the Government on our democratic process. The current challenges that face the country require actions that are perceived by the populace to be nationalistic rather than political.

Until that happens, the Govern-ment's strategies and attempts to solve the country's problems will be met with constant scepticism because of these public-sector 'bunglings'.

I am, etc.,
