THE EDITOR, Sir:The recent call by some churchmen to resume hanging in Jamaica has rekindled debate about the supposed contradictions inherent in the Christian teaching. The million-dollar question is: How could a God who gave His son to die for the world support the taking of another human life?
In addition, there are persons who find it unacceptable that a good God could order His servants - the Israelites - to march into Canaan and destroy every living person, including babies and pregnant women.
'Contradiction'
If we are to resolve the 'contradiction', we need to realise that these acts by God were not carried out in a spirit of revenge, but rather, they were corrective measures, measures that had to be taken for the rest of mankind to advance and prosper.
Imagine with me what society would be like today if Sodom and Gomorrah had been left unchecked, if God had not taken corrective measures? Even the final judgement would be an act designed to correct the wrongs mankind has heaped upon the Earth.
Unacceptable
Another common 'contradiction' is where persons find it unacceptable that one man sinned and everybody else is made to pay for that one man's sin. Whoever finds this to be unjust needs to tell me that he has never done anything wrong in all his life, and that he knows that he is incapable of doing anything wrong.
One of mankind's biggest problems is that it has no idea how limited it is in knowledge compared to God. If we had the capacity to know just half of what God knows, we would not be accusing God of questionable acts. Must not the Judge of all the Earth be righteous?
I am, etc.,
