THE ROARING engines and screaming wheels of Peter 'Bull' Thompson's new-look RX7 Mazda excited the thousands of die-hard motorsport fans at the grand finale race meet, held at the Dover Raceway, St Ann, last Monday.
"I am happy that I was able to make fans proud," said Thompson, who won both sections of the Thundersport event.
Like Usain Bolt out of the starting block, Thompson who qualified on pole, got off to a fantastic start in the first of the two Thundersport races. He led from start to finish, increasing his lead, lap by lap.
Best race day
"Lap time is not important anymore, is the person who takes the left-angled Goodyear corner first that matters, because if that person can maintain the lead, then they should easily win the event," said Thomspon.
The Clarendon-based driver was enjoying his best race day over the past two race meets. Each time he prepared the RX7 Mazda for the meet, something always happened at the last moment, preventing him from participating.
"The preparation this time was lengthy and we took our own time to get the job done. Thanks to the team," Thompson commented.
Other stars of the meet were motorcyclist Stefan Chin who defeated the two Americans and Tedroy 'Teddy' Burton, who also won two convincing races. The first of the two was a thriller. It was a ding-dong battle between him and Guy Fraser.
Both cars raced bumper to bumper, with Fraser pulling out all stops to overtake him, while negotiating the corners. This gesture excited the fans, who kept moving from one point to the another, to focus on the race.
"My Honda beat up the Mitsubishi Eves," boosted a smiling Burton, shortly after he defeated Guy Fraser.
It was a fun-filled day, as the fans were further entertained by the Beijing Olympic heroes. Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, who at one stage, jokingly challenged each other over a 10-metre dash. Bolt in particular danced up a storm on the track, doing the 'Gully Creeper' and the 'Nuh Linga'.
Apart from signing a number of autographs, they took turns in driving the pace car around the track.
In the meantime, Team MoBay Racing registered yet another milestone in Dover's racing history. Another of its member, Gary Williams, was named the overall Jamaica Race Drivers' Club Circuit Racing champion.
The team displayed depth of talent, level of preparation and consistent race results by winning the title for the last three years with three different drivers. Team leader Douglas 'Hollywood' Gore had won the championship in 2006, followed by Guy Fraser in 2007.
