The Editor Sir,On October 17, there was an interesting article in The Gleaner titled, 'Train kids in self-defence'. I endorse that very important article, and am 100 per cent behind that lady for expressing such great concern for our children - in seeing them helping themselves.
When we talk about self-defence, there might have to be a great deal of body or physical contact. Two wrongs cannot make a right and I am not encouraging violence, but we have to think of ways to defend ourselves and our children. Even the Christians - with the help of God - cannot be like lambs to the slaughter and do nothing in self-defence. When we come to think of it, maybe if we were taught some ways to defend ourselves, many people would not have died.
We have heard that pepper spray can be useful in self-defence. There are certain parts on the human body that are very tender - such as the eye, the belly and the private parts (of the male). So when a stone-hearted beast attacks a young schoolgirl she should try to defend herself if she can, or else run and scream for help. Appropriate training in self-defence is a good suggestion.
I am, etc.,
