The Editor, Sir:In The Gleaner (October 20), your columnist Garth Rattray wrote a piece which acknowledged the merit of persons who were receiving national honours at the annual Heroes' Day Awards Ceremony, but also identified a number of the unsung heroes of our society who do not receive such national recognition. Among these he identified members of the security forces who have given exceptional service under very difficult conditions. He did, however, preface his comments by including one sentence in the relevant paragraph which acknowledged the corruption by some policemen and policewomen.
Editorial decision
How could that one reference have justified your editorial decision to include as a subheading for the entire paragraph, "Corruption in the Force"? Surely that is grossly misleading and does not in any way represent the focus of the writer's comments in this column. I hope that he will receive an apology and that your staff will try to make more appropriate judgements in carrying out what should be the function of facilitating readers' identification of the writer's main points.

Note: Reader Maxwell doth protest too much. The centreline, used primarily to relieve grey typeface, simply acknowledges one negative aspect of the writer's laudatory commentary. - The Editor
