Homecoming too lavish
published: Wednesday | October 22, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I do believe that the Government spent far too much money on the lavish homecoming for the Jamaican athletes, who well deserve celebration. However, a weekend celebration would have done the job; Saturday - a motorcade around the island, stopping in major towns, ending Sunday afternoon at the National Stadium with a plaque presentation ceremony.

I cannot understand any government that has the problems Jamaica has and sees no problem in spending a lot of money that could be used otherwise, like in agriculture, road repairs, etc. Yes, they deserve recognition, but without spending millions of dollars.

I believe that the Government should have a committee of economists and other professionals that has responsibility in overseeing this type of expenditure and help make wise and responsible decisions.

I am, etc,
