The way forward
Re 'Tufton appeals to the youth', is a timely warning for Jamaicans to wake up and take control of their lives.
Dancing for tourists is not the only way. In light of what is now unfolding on a worldwide scale, the mantra should now be "sustainable development". Through agricultural methods and manufacturing many of those idle hands could be gainfully employed producing essential goods for the population's needs.
Putting all your eggs into one basket, that is, tourism, to get your hands on that much sought-after 'foreign exchange', only to turn around and spend it on imports, is a complete no-brainer! Starting to build our own economy and industries is the way forward.

Selling our souls
The sentiments of Monday's editorial, 'Threat of economical penalties from AIDS', point to us selling not only our bodies for money, but our very souls. Those of us who remain true to our morals and haven't sold out yet need to remain strong.
This shows that there is a measure of sickness in the minds of those who think the nature of progress is akin to Sodom and Gomorrah. I pray for the leaders in the public and private sectors, the churches, schools, universities, the homes that have some morals left to stand for what is pure and true, to serve honestly and work diligently.
So that Jamaica under God will increase in beauty and fellowship for the whole human race. We can set the example if we decide to. Haven't we noticed the whole world is going to hell in a handbasket, following the lamblike beast?

Congrats
It is with great pride I read that the Welch brothers have finally been recognised. There are many others who should be recognised, but this occasion only happens yearly.
Again congrats to all the recipients and our continued blessing to the families that make this a memorable event.

Dr Packer, CD
Congratulations to Dr Claude Packer, an Order of Distinction well deserved. As a product of Dr Packer, while at the UWI, I can say his teaching methods are most effective. Today, while not a teacher, I use his style in assisting students in simplifying and learning mathematics.
Well done, Dr Packer.
