Wheels of Law wins feature at Caymanas
published: Sunday | September 7, 2008

Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

CHAMPION JOCKEY Omar Walker, fresh from a five-timer on Wednesday which included his 200th career win, guided 5-1 chance WHEELS OF LAW to a decisive victory in the Violet Armond Memorial Cup feature (claiming $270,000-$250,000) over 1600 metres at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Given an enterprising ride by the 25-year-old apprentice, WHEELS OF LAW, from the stables of veteran trainer Robert Darby Sr, won by 2 1/2 lengths from 15-1 outsider RAINBOW TRAIN who was 3 1/2 lengths clear of ALLEGRO (19-1) and the 4-5 favourite BORN FIGHTER, head on for third and fourth, respectively.

WHEELS OF LAW was ridden to lead on the inside in less than a dozen strides but he was soon joined by the outsider DUST ROCK who went through under Jason Simpson.

Good win

Walker, however, bided his time in second aboard WHEELS OF LAW before sending her through approaching the 600-metre pole.

She turned for home with RAINBOW TRAIN looming on the outside and BORN FIGHTER looking likely to make a race of it on the inside rails.

But under a smooth ride from Walker, the six-year-old daughter of Law Of The Sea - She's On Wheels, kept on strongly for a good win.

WHEELS OF LAW is owned by Kary Neale and bred by the HAM Stables Limited.

This was her fourth win from 14 starts this season as she had previously won back-to-back races in early summer at attractive odds of 39-1 and 14-1, and another at 10-1 on February 16 when trained by Lawrence Freemantle.

Walker had a second winner on the card in 6-1 chance RIGGED TO WIN for his apprentice master, champion trainer Wayne DaCosta in the fourth race over 1100 metres for four-year-olds and up.

Outpaced into the straight as POWERFUL PROSPECT led from the favourite ROYAL MAJESTY in a field of nine, RIGGED TO WIN produced a tremendous last furlong run widest of all to sweep past the leaders ROYAL MAJESTY and ECSTASY in deep stretch, winning by three quarters of a length.

Noteworthy performance

RIGGED TO WIN, who earlier this season had the unenviable reputation of being a bridesmaid in racing, has now won two of her past four races for owner the Ping Pong Stables.

The four-year-old filly, by Outrigger out of Crusader's Shield, was the fifth winner for DaCosta since Wednesday, having saddled four on that mid-week card. Walker has now ridden 102 winners this season - 26 clear of closest rival Dane Nelson.

The other noteworthy performance on the nine-race programme was turned in by evens favourite GAMBOA in the fifth race for three-year-olds and up over the straight five course.

Ridden by Shane Ellis for owner/trainer Richard Azan, the three-year-old grey gelding, by He'stherealthing out of Princess Naevus, streaked home by five lengths in the smart time of 57.2 to record consecutive wins over the straight course.
