The Editor, Sir:I am at my wits' end. I have never felt so frustrated, angry and powerless in my life.
This month the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) threw on over $3,000 on my electricity bill. I just saw an ad in the papers this week where the company 'explained' that it had made an error by billing customers for 10 days extra.
Now, if the company made that error, why do we have to pay it?
Moreover, it's not even that I don't want to pay it but they need to know that slamming people with unplanned expenses of this magnitude has real implications, especially at a time when we have to prepare for back to school.
Real choices
That $3,000 means two less uniforms for my daughter or holding off on some of the books. Those are the real choices I have to make.
Why can't we just pay the amount equivalent to the last bill while JPS sorts out its problems, without penalising us.
I know that if I don't pay my light will be cut off and I will be slammed with an additional charge for reconnection. All because of its error.
I've watched my bill double over two years and there's nothing I can do about it, despite my best efforts.
JPS wants us to pay the extra money, claiming they will correct it next month, but without making any offer or guarantees about how we will be reimbursed for their slackness. This exploitation makes me sad and angry.
I am, etc.,
