THE EDITOR, Sir:
JAMAICA'S PROWESS in the field of athletics is once again in the limelight, with dominance in key events in Beijing, China. We should capitalise on this.
Malaysia, for example, has an international training and schooling (educational) centre which attracts numerous junior and high-ranking badminton players, all-year round. It's a resounding success not only for its own players, but players from all parts of the globe. The players live in a complex where they not only train in the sport, but are afforded education - a win-win combination.
The malaysian model
Our success in attracting tourists, our recent progress in developing our international airports and road systems, our natural resources of gypsum, limestone and bauxite, our coffee plantations, our music, etc, are already world renowned.
It is about time that having shown the world we have what may be termed 'indigenous, world-class athletes and coaches' that we endeavour to build an institution based on the Malaysian badminton model in order to attract athletes from all across the world.
I am confident that if such an institution were to be established in Jamaica, it would send a clear message to the world that we are more than just about great athletes and coaches - but willing to share our expertise, while, of course, providing numerous opportunities for our prospective athletes, teachers and coaches.
I am, etc.,
